Private Industry Council is Named 2005 Dominion Foundation
Community Impact Award Winner

Greensburg, PA - The Private Industry Council of Westmoreland/Fayette, Inc. (PIC), is pleased to announce that it has been recognized as a recipient of the 2005 Community Impact Award by the Dominion Foundation. PIC was one of only eight winning organizations; thirty additional organizations were nominated.

Each year a total of $60,000 is awarded to organizations for revitalization projects covering a 16-county region. The funding comes from the Dominion Foundation which is dedicated to the economic, physical, and social health of the communities served by Dominion companies.

As a result of the damage caused by Hurricane Ivan in September 2004, grant funds were issued to support intensive clean-up efforts. These dollars were part of a statewide National Emergency Grant (NEG) issued by the U.S. Department of Labor to help deal with the disaster aftermath. The Private Industry Council was contracted by the Westmoreland/Fayette Workforce Investment Board (WIB) to administer the grant, which funded seven temporary jobs through September 2005. Workers hired by PIC performed cleaning, repair, renovation, and reconstruction of damaged and destroyed public structures, facilities, and lands in the designated flood area. Areas that were selected for clean up through these efforts were Westmoreland County parks Twin Lakes Park (outside Greensburg) and Northmoreland Park (near Vandergrift), New Stanton Park, Derry Boro, Linn Run State Park, and Bull Run Dam (in Jeannette).

Because of the hard work and commitment of PIC, several thousand individuals from both inside and outside the county are now able to visit and enjoy these park and recreational areas. The project provided direct employment opportunities for seven long-term unemployed workers. The project was also able to save the community approximately $78,122 by using the PIC workers and the grant funds to complete the work, rather than outside contractors and taxpayer dollars.
