2010 Fayette Enrichment Program wraps up with Carnegie Science Center's “Science on the Road” program
December 22, 2010 by Rachel Saul
The fall session of the Fayette Enrichment after school programs have wrapped up for the holidays! This portion of the school year saw many great programs and activities happening within both the elementary schools and the junior highs and high school.
During the last few weeks of November the Carnegie Science Center brought their “Science on the Road” program to the schools. The children in the Jr. High component of the program enjoyed “Unisphere, Space and Time” where they were able to go inside of a large dome and experience simulated constellations and learn all about Greek mythology through mathematics and geography of the stars. The elementary schools had a similar presentation with “Earth Balloon” where they went inside of a large inflatable earth that was a true scale representation of the Earth made from photos taken from a NASA shuttle.
In addition to these fun activities, PIC sponsored a team of Brownsville Jr. High students in the First Lego League Competition that was held at the Carnegie Mellon Institute for Robotics. The competition was held the first weekend of December. The students from Brownsville worked diligently on their designs all fall, resulting in their robot fairing well in the competition!
Not only were students afforded learning and enrichment activities, students from Lafayette were given coats from Fayette Community Action. The coats were donated by Aeropostale, a popular brand with the kids!
In addition, parents from both Menallen and Lafayette participated in an end of season Parent Workshop. Parents of students in both elementary schools attended a dinner sponsored by PIC and Tame, Inc. of Beaver Falls. Dr. Donald Sheffield, of Tame, Inc., presented students with awards and talked to the parents about building strong homework habits and responsibilities at home.
The Private Industry Council afterschool programs in Lafayette and Menallen Elementary Schools are held Monday through Thursdays from 3:30-5:30 p.m. In addition, the Private Industry Council administrates afterschool programs to middle school students in the Uniontown, Connellsville, and Albert Gallatin Area School Districts and middle and secondary schools in the Brownsville Area School District.
