The Private Industry Council Receives a Spring Grant to Support a Community Garden Project in Monessen
December 20, 2010 by Courtney DeCarlucci
The Private Industry Council is pleased to announce that it is a recipient of a Spring Biodiversity grant. Spring is a funding program of The Sprout Fund and supported by the Pittsburgh Foundation. The goal of the program is to offer opportunities for the citizens of southwestern Pennsylvania to combat environmental challenges and demonstrate the value of biodiversity, or the variety of life on earth.
According to the Sprout fund, “Biodiversity is an essential part of sustaining the living networks that provide us with health, wealth, food, fuel, and the vital resources on which our lives depend. The loss of biodiversity, due in part to human activity, has greatly accelerated. These irreversible losses impoverish us all and damage the life support systems we rely on every day.”
The Sprout program hopes to catalyze community-based projects in Pittsburgh and surrounding communities that inspire greater stewardship of our region’s natural resources. The Private Industry Council’s proposal for a Community Garden Project in Monessen, was one of 20 biodiversity projects selected for Sprout funding. PIC will receive $5,000 to support a weeklong biodiversity camp for youth to learn about biodiversity in agriculture, rainwater collection, composting, and gardening. Collaborators for this project include the Monessen Family Center, the Monessen Communities that Care program, and 4H. |
