The Fayette Enrichment Afterschool Program Is Cooking!
March 25, 2011
The Fayette Enrichment Program held Parent Workshops in all sites: Albert Gallatin South Middle School, Brownsville (Middle and High School), Connellsville West, and Lafayette Jr. High. As part of the workshop, parents were given the opportunity to attend an informative session featuring Rick Sheffield from TAME, Inc. Mr. Sheffield spoke about Promoting Excellence at Home: Behaviors for Success.
The children at each of these sites worked in conjunction with the teachers to make delicious and appealing dishes or create extraordinary projects. They also had the opportunity to showcase their talents to their parents.
- The students at Albert Gallatin South Middle School had a special presentation for the parents. They recited the alphabet using sign language as well as the pledge of allegiance. Ms. Meyokovich led the children in their demonstrations. After the presentation, students challenged parents to guess their names by following the sign language alphabet sheet.
- At Brownsville, teachers and students worked together in a cook-off. The main ingredient was chocolate and several delicacies were created. Among them were chocolate mousse, fresh fruits dipped in chocolate, and soufflé. Parents and other guests participated as judges and had the opportunity to sample the creations. The contest resulted in a tie.
- At Connellsville West, parents were invited to visit the classroom and see some of the projects that the students designed. After Mr. Sheffield’s presentation, students participated in the Duck Tape Fashion Show. Prior to the event the students and teachers worked diligently to prepare vests and other articles of clothing, made entirely of duct tape to showcase. During the second half of the workshop, students participated in a contest to build the tallest newspaper tower. They were required to build a tower using only a specific number of newspaper sheets and tape.
- At Lafayette Junior High, teachers and students also participated in a cook-off. Again, chocolate was the main ingredient with three teams competing. Mr. Valentovich’s team worked with Cocoa Krispies, Chocolate, and Peanut Butter. Mr. Harbulak’s team made chocolate-covered bananas on sticks. And Mr. Zajac’s team made the winning chocolate-covered strawberries!
With funds from the PA Department of Education and the 21st Century Learning grant, The Private Industry Council of Westmoreland/Fayette, Inc. offers afterschool programs to middle school students in the Albert Gallatin, Connellsville, and Uniontown Area School Districts as well as the Brownsville Jr. and Sr. High School.
