A Day in the Sun!
June 21, 2011
May 25, 2011, was a highly anticipated day at Head Start/Early Head Start of Fayette County. This was the day that the program went to Idlewild Park! After weeks of preparation, nineteen buses rolled up the mountain that morning with families aboard. And even more families transported themselves! After registering at the park, all were free to enjoy the day; returning to the pavilion for breakfast, lunch, and snacks provided by Nutrition, Inc.
The day was packed with learning, too. The annual nutrition and physical activity event, Munch, Mingle, Move, was held this year in an adjoining pavilion at Idlewild. Susan Mongell, Nutrition Supervisor, coordinated the event along with the MMM committee. The activities focused on the dress, music, and culture of several African countries. Children were able to decorate rain sticks and maracas and practice using them in time to the African music. A slideshow documented some of the classroom learning events from this program year, a result of a General Mills grant.
The day seemed to pass so quickly, and soon it was time to load the buses and head back down the mountain. It was a day when staff wasn’t idle and children didn’t get too wild, and a nice time was had by all.
