Youth Programs Now Recruiting!

November 30, 2011

The Youth Staff is currently recruiting for in-school programs in both Westmoreland and Fayette Counties. Interested and motivated in-school youth can earn money while exploring career opportunities and developing job skills.

The Youth Careers Utilizing Basic Engineering (YouCUBE) Program is a career exploration program for high school juniors and seniors, who are interested in science, technology, engineering and math. During this year-round program, participants meet twice a month after school from January to May. In June, the students participate in a three-week program which features tours of manufacturers and post-secondary schools in Southwestern PA. During both the after-school and summer components, youth work on activities such as marble roller coasters, LEGO Mindstorms robots, duct tape design, pasta bridges, water bottle rockets and hot air balloons. During July and August, work experiences with local non-profits will be offered to interested participants. Students will earn a stipend for participation in this program.

The Work Experience Internship Program is for in-school youth ages 17-21. This program places youth in non-profits during the school year. Youth can work up to 100 hours to earn a $500 stipend. The Work-Experience Internship Program provides youth with the opportunity to build a foundation of work skills. Work opportunities will be provided by local non-profit organizations, municipalities, school districts, townships, state government offices, and county government departments.

To apply for either program, youth must complete an application and meet the eligibility requirements. Youth must enroll on the PA CareerLink website at www.cwds.state.pa.us. For more details about the programs or to obtain an application, please contact one of the following Youth Specialists:
