PIC Receives Grant from the ADA Foundation's Harris Fund
Greensburg, PA - The Private Industry Council of Westmoreland/Fayette, Inc. (PIC), is pleased to announce that it has received a $5,000 grant to support a children's oral health care project from the Harris Fund for Children's Dental Health for the Head Start/Early Head Start of Fayette County programs.

The ADA (American Dental Association) Foundation established a permanent endowment fund dedicated to the prevention of childhood tooth decay and oral health maintenance for children. The Harris Fund awards competitive grants of up to $5,000 to applicants whose oral health promotion programs are designed to improve and maintain children's oral health through community education programs. The grant program's main objective is to help children whose socio-economic status impacts on their access to professional oral care and adversely affects their oral health habits at home. The program philosophy also seeks to increase access to, and education on, oral health care by encouraging volunteerism in the oral health professions community.

The PIC will utilize these funds for its "Brush Smart with Head Start" program to develop and broadcast a series of Public Service Announcements (PSAs) on a local cable affiliate in Fayette County, HSTV. The PSAs will serve several purposes. They will offer general oral health information to all viewers, in particular to those families with children most at risk to poor oral care; they will assist with offering information on HS/EHS services in Fayette County; they will aid in recruiting additional parent volunteers for HS/EHS activities; and they will aid in recruiting additional area dental professionals, including dentists and hygienists, for additional collaboration with the HS/EHS program. By using this method of advocacy, PIC will be able to reach the greatest number of people.

In addition to the PSAs, the initiative also includes distribution of dental and oral health educational materials, including brochures, activity booklets, and dental kits. These items will be distributed at Head Start activities, social nights, and during classroom presentations that will be offered by the dentists who currently collaborate with the Head Start/Early Head Start program.
