BIO: As a professional football player, I faced many challenges on the field. The rigors of training, coping with injuries and the pressure to "win" at all costs took its toll on my physical well-being. However, the successes of being a part of the prestigious Pittsburgh Steelers during the Super Bowl championships seemed to make it all worthwhile. I was once one of the strongest players in the NFL. I competed and placed 3rd & 2nd in the 1981-1982 NFL's Strongest Man Competition respectively. I also played on the two final Steeler Super Bowl teams. Little did I know that I soon would face one of the biggest challenges of my life. In November 1988, I was diagnosed with dilated-cardiomyopathy, a disease resulting in a weakness and enlargement of the heart muscle. I was given 4-5 years to live without a heart transplant.
While waiting on a transplant list and being sedentary, I gained considerable excess body fat. Knowing that I needed to lose weight I fortunately was introduced to Dr. Barry Sears and his "Zone" dietary principles. Barry predicted to me and my cardiologist that if I was compliant to his dietary lifestyle that I would lose 70 lbs. of body fat and my heart would improve to the degree that I would be removed from the transplant list. My case study is highlighted in Dr. Sears first book The Zone (Harper, Collins 1995).
After 1 ½ years of modifying my diet and following a moderate exercise program, Barry's prediction came true. My body and weight dropped from 328 - 255 lbs. without loss of muscle mass! Currently, my weight is between 235-245 lbs. at approximately 7% body fat. My heart also improved enough to be taken off the active transplant list.
This experimental odyssey definitely taught me much about diet and low impact exercise techniques. Since then I have used and continued to refine these basic diet and exercise principles. There is no mystery in the medical literature or in just plain common sense in recognizing that a sound exercise program combined with intelligent eating habits can reap major benefits in health and quality of life.
Today, as a certified personal trainer and professional speaker, I share the knowledge of what I have learned with others. My seminars are both motivational and informational. I devote my life to living well and staying healthy through a balance of proper diet and exercise. Individuals can achieve many successes by adopting a "new attitude" toward diet and exercise. When this happens, we are on our way to becoming healthier mentally and physically, enhancing our appearance can even manifest anti-aging effects. You may ask, how is this possible? I can provide this information through my seminar presentations.
