Private Industry Council Receives Grant from Target for Literacy Night
Greensburg, PA- The Private Industry Council of Westmoreland/Fayette, Inc. (PIC), is pleased to announce that it has once again been funded by Target's Community Giving Programs. A grant was approved in the amount of $2,500 for support of PIC's Family Literacy program, specifically for a Childhood Literacy/Reading Program.
The monthly literacy night, which extends for a nine-month period during the school year, includes activities such as storytelling and related literacy activities, role play activities, an arts and crafts activity, and a healthful snack. Each literacy night every child will also be given an age-appropriate book that is related to that evening's story to take home to begin a library of their own.
The Private Industry Council was fortunate to have received a Target Store Grant in 2005, also for the Childhood Literacy Program. During that time, PIC hosted a total of 184 children and 145 families for the Family Literacy events.
The grant is a part of the ongoing support Target provides to local communities throughout the country. Every week Target gives more than $2 million to strengthen families and communities across the nation, with a focus on education, the arts, social services, and other vital community partnerships.
Additionally, Target also gives back through signature programs that are designed to inspire learning in children and families. Programs include:
- Take Charge of Education©, a school fundraising program
- Ready. Sit. Read!, a program dedicated to fostering a life-long love of reading in children
- Start Something©, a partnership between Target and the Tiger Woods Foundation which helps kids build core values
- Target House ©, which serves as a home away from home for families of children receiving life-saving treatment at St. Jude Children's Research Hospital in Memphis, and
- Target Volunteers, where Target team members and retirees annually donate more than 300,000 hours of time to more than 7,500 community-based projects
