Family Literacy Hosts Two Family Events in September

PIC's Greensburg Family Literacy program sponsored two family-centered events in September. The Family Literacy program recognizes parents as the first teachers of their children and, through evening Family Literacy events, offers free activities that involve parents in their children's first educational experiences.

The Family Literacy night on September 13th centered on the back to school theme, and the evening's story was "Back to School with Junie B. Jones." The character of Junie B. Jones, played by PIC Instructor Carol Thomas, greeted the children and their parents as they arrived for the event. Junie B. then enthusiastically read sections of Junie B. Jones and the Stupid Smelly Bus as the families listened together. Everyone then lined up for a school bus ride provided by Head Start of Fayette County. Harry Metz, Transportation Coordinator for Fayette County's Head Start, guided the children in safety measures and proper bus behavior. Afterwards, parents and children worked together making Judy B. Jones' hair bows. Everyone left the party with a free copy of Barbara Park's Junie B. Jones and the Stupid Smelly Bus to enjoy again at home.

The second September Family Literacy event, "Open Wide for Dental Hygiene," was held on the 27th. Children first met the Tooth Fairy, performed by PIC caseworker Jennifer Peitz, who delighted the audience with stories of her life collecting teeth. Dr. Barry Bupp, a dentist specializing in children's dentistry, then spoke to the guests about the importance of brushing and annual check-ups for all children. Families finished the evening by creating Tooth Fairy tooth boxes and pillows, while eating healthy snacks. Each family left with a complimentary copy of Open Wide: Tooth School Inside by Laurie Keller.

PIC's Family Literacy Program holds free themed events for families every month. October events include "Caterpillars to Butterflies" on October 11th and a "Jack-O Lantern Party" on the 26th. Both events will be held from 6:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. and include a complimentary book for each family. Please call Melody at (724) 836-2600, extension 218 to sign up for either activity, or for more information on the Family Literacy program.
