1.    Where can I test?
The PIC has test sites for the general public in
  • Greensburg        724-836-2600
  • Connellsville        724-626-1070
  • Monessen            724-379-4750
  • New Kensington    724-334-8600
  • Check GED Calendar for test dates and times.

    2.    How long is the test?

Examinees are given 7.5 hours to complete the entire test. We give the test in parts over 2 days.

    3.    Do I have to take classes before taking the GED?

No, but we do strongly encourage all examinees to take our pretest, the TABE, to help determine if classes are necessary. The preparation classes at the PIC are free and new students start every week. Hundreds of students benefit from classes every year!

    4.    What subject areas are covered on the GED exam?

The five subjects are Reading, Writing, Science, Social Studies, and Mathematics.

    5.    Are calculators allowed during the Math section?

The testing center provides calculators for Part I of the Math test. Students are not permitted to bring their own calculators.

    6.    What is a passing score for the GED?

Each test is scored on a 200-800 point scale with 410 being the minimum passing score on each subtest and a 2250 total passing score for the entire exam.

    7.    How long will it take to get results?

All examinees will receive test results in the mail from Harrisburg approximately 4-8 weeks from the test date.

    8.    Do I have to take the whole test over or just the parts I don't pass?

Examinees only have to retake the sections of the GED they do not pass with at least a 410. However, students may pass each section and still not pass the entire exam; therefore, you may have to retest in some sections in order to obtain a total score of 2250.

    9.    What is the cost of the GED?

The cost is $50 for the entire exam or $12 per part. Some low income students may qualify for programs to assist with GED payment. Call 724-836-2600 for more information.

    10.    How do I start?

Examinees should call the test site closest to them to schedule an orientation or the TABE pretest.
