On September 13th and 14th Administrators and Professional Development Specialists of the PA Department of Education Bureau of Adult Basic and Literacy Education programs joined together for a Professional Development Team Institute in Camp Hill, PA.
  • PIC YouthBuild Program Site Visit
    On Friday August 12, 2011, The Uniontown Youthbuild Crew went on a site visit to the Western Pennsylvania Operating Engineers (WPOE), Joint Apprenticeship and Training Program: http://wpaoperators.org At this site located in New Alexandria, PA, the WPOE train individuals interested in becoming heavy equipment operators and/or mechanic technicians.

  • PIC Head Start learners Grow Up Great with Science!
    The Private Industry Council Head Start/Early Head Start of Fayette County (HS/EHS Fay Co) is pleased to announce that in collaboration with California University of Pennsylvania, the Pittsburgh Association for Young Children (PAEYC) and the Pennsylvania Intermediate Unit 1 (IU1), they have been awarded a third year of funding for the PNC Foundation- Grow Up Great With Science Grant (GUGWS).
  • New Certified Energy Auditors In Fayette County, PA
    The Private Industry Council of Westmoreland/Fayette, Inc. is proud to announce that the first graduates of the Pathways Out of Poverty funded Building Performance Institute (BPI) Energy Auditor Training have become certified Energy Auditors. Several graduates of the program including Geno Gallo, Shirley Rosenberger, and Timothy Wargo have taken advantage of the grant money available through the Pathways Out Of Poverty and Fayette Energy grants for business start-up expenses and have partnered to form Fayette Energy Consultants.   • YouCUBE Youth Explore STEM Careers
    Toys, cookies, and lots of free stuff! While the Youth Careers Utilizing Engineering Program (YouCUBE) participants came away from the program with many freebies, they also came away with a unique experience which allowed them to glean much insight from industry insiders about the manufacturing field, employer expectations and career paths.

    The PIC Youth Staff is currently accepting applications for the 2011-2012 YouCUBE Program. There are some eligibility requirements. For more information, please contact the PIC Office in Greensburg at 724-836-2600 or in Uniontown at 724-434-5627.
  • New Incredible Years Parent Group Training This Fall!
    The Private Industry Council is happy to announce that the Fayette County Head Start Center of Excellence program, Social Emotional Early Development Success (SEEDS), will be hosting an Incredible Years Parent Group Training this fall. This training covers various topics including: child directed play, effective praise, positive discipline, limit-setting, how to handle misbehavior, time-outs, and adult problem solving.
  • TravelEDGE Classes Come to Fayette County
    The Education and Technology Institute (ETI) will be offering TravelEDGE classes to Fayette County businesses and their employees who work in hospitality and tourism-related fields. TravelEDGE focuses on developing industry-specific customer service skills to help hospitality/tourism businesses get more customers.
  • PIC Awarded "LEARN" Grant
    The Private Industry Council of Westmoreland/Fayette recently received a grant from the Office of Child Development and Early Learning (OCDEL) to fund the Fayette County Local Education and Resource Network (LEARN) Team. The Fayette County LEARN team, formerly known as the Community Engagement Group (CEG) will work diligently to become the catalyst which connects families to Early Learning Opportunities.
  • FREE Dads Matter Saturday Seminar in Greensburg!
    On Saturday, August 27, 2011 Dads Matter will host a Saturday Seminar at the Four Points Sheraton in Greensburg, PA from 10:00am-1:00pm. Admission is free for this event and lunch is included! Call Dads Matter today at 724-836-2600 to register, seating is limited!!
  • PIC Hires New Director of Head Start/Early Head Start and Announces Fatherhood Supervisor
    President Tim Yurcisin of the Private Industry Council of Westmoreland/Fayette, Inc., is pleased to announce that Jacquelyn Hoppe has been hired as the Director of Head Start/Early Head Start of Fayette County. Jacquelyn will be responsible for overseeing the Head Start/Early Head Start program of Fayette County, as well as overseeing operations of the PA Pre-K Counts Partnership.
  • PIC Promotes “Growth” in Monessen
    The seed started with the Private Industry Council’s proposal to the Pittsburgh based Sprout Fund in the winter of 2010. The Sprout program set out with hopes to catalyze community-based projects in Pittsburgh and surrounding communities that would inspire greater stewardship of our region’s natural resources.
  • 2010-2011 PIC Divisional Employees of the Year
    Congratulations to John Chedister, Helen Gilpin, and Sue Polojac who are being recognized as Private Industry Council of Westmoreland/Fayette, Inc. Divisional Employees of the Year. In June each was awarded a $500 check and an engraved personalized pen.
  • A Day in the Sun!
    May 25, 2011, was a highly anticipated day at Head Start/Early Head Start of Fayette County. This was the day that the program went to Idlewild Park! After weeks of preparation, nineteen buses rolled up the mountain that morning with families aboard.
  • Summer Fun for YOUth in Fayette County!
    The Fayette Enrichment Program is gearing up for the 2011 summer session. For six weeks, starting on June 20, youth will have an opportunity to participate in a variety of exciting activities.
  • Team Head Start at the March of Dimes
    On Saturday, April 30, 2011 Head Start/ Early Head Start, Pre-K, and Dads Matter met at Mount Saint Macrina to participate in the March of Dimes “March for Babies”. Thanks to all who participated and/or donated in the March of Dimes “March for Babies”. We raised $1,729.45!
  • Head Start Museum of Art at the Mall
    The Uniontown Mall recently played host to many of the county’s youngest artists. On April 20, 2011, Head Start/Early Head Start of Fayette County presented a “Museum of Art” in the walkways of the mall, using elaborately decorated tables to showcase artwork from each classroom and home-based area.
  • ETI Students Pass Excel Certification Test
    Education and Technology Institute (ETI) instructor, Richard Bitner, just concluded teaching a Microsoft Office Certification class to three of six Excela Health employees. All three employees have concluded the class and passed their Excel certification tests. The remaining three will be going on to gain certification in Word, Power Point, or Outlook. 
  • Green Jobs Open House in Uniontown, PA
    Pathways is holding an Open House at the East End Community Center in Uniontown, PA. Attendees can explore green career opportunities and sign up for free solar, wind, and geothermal training on the spot. Pre-register for a chance to win the door-prize.   • PIC’s own Dads Matter program to host Saturday Seminar in Uniontown
    Dads Matter, PIC’s fatherhood education program which is based in Fayette County, PA, will be hosting a Saturday Seminar featuring four great workshops. It will be held at the East End United Community Center on Sat., April 23, from 9:30 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.
  • Wii love March Madness!!
    The Private Industry Council of Westmoreland/Fayette, Inc. hosted the Latrobe Area Chamber of Commerce for a March Madness event on Thursday, March 24, 2011. Chamber Members were greeted by Private Industry Council President and C.E.O. Tim Yurcisin along with Chamber President and referee, Andy Stofan. 
  • The Fayette Enrichment Afterschool Program Is Cooking!
    The Fayette Enrichment Program held Parent Workshops in all sites: Albert Gallatin South Middle School, Brownsville (Middle and High School), Connellsville West, and Lafayette Jr. High. As part of the workshop, parents were given the opportunity to attend an informative session featuring Rick Sheffield from TAME, Inc. Mr. Sheffield spoke about Promoting Excellence at Home: Behaviors for Success. 
  • Head Start/Early Head Start of Fayette County celebrates Dental Education Month
    Head Start/Early Head Start of Fayette County celebrated Dental Education Month during February by providing Oral Health Education to their classrooms and home based areas. Registered Nursing students from the Penn State Fayette Campus along with Head Start LPNs provided a lesson with the help of ELMO’S Ready, Set, Brush pop-up book. 
  • PIC’s own Dads Matter program to host Kickoff Luncheon in Westmoreland County
    Dads Matter, PIC’s fatherhood education program which is based in Fayette County, PA, will be hosting a kickoff luncheon for non-profit professionals to unveil the launch of their free Dad 2 Dad classes in Westmoreland County. The luncheon will be hosted at the Private Industry Council, 219 Donohoe Rd. in Greensburg on March 23, from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.
  • Private Industry Council Promotes From Within
    The Private Industry Council of Westmoreland/Fayette, Inc., is pleased to announce that Rachel Saul has been hired as the Planner/Grants Writer, effective March 7, 2011. Her primary responsibilities will be to research and capture funding opportunities; as well as assist with Marketing and Public Relations.
  • Congressman Mark Critz Visits PIC’s Early Childhood Division
    Congressman Mark Critz, representing the 12th Congressional District, Pennsylvania paid a visit to the Private Industry Council’s Early Childhood Division in Uniontown on Friday, February 25, 2011. The Congressman spent about an hour and a half learning about the Private Industry Council’s Early Childhood initiatives, including Head Start/Early Head Start, Pre-K Counts, and PIC’s newest initiative, SEEDS (Social Emotional Early Developmental Success).
  • Pathways Out of Poverty Success Story
    Gerard Sabolek came to the Pathways program with a desire to find his place in the modern world of “Green Energy” employment. He knew that although he had past experience in HVAC and Solar Energy, his skills were outdated. Gerard was also a little bit concerned about his age and whether he would still be able to physically perform the heavy labor of his past experience in HVAC, which included installing and removing furnaces.
  • Head Start Instructor the Recipient of the Fayette County Educator of the Year Award
    Our own Brenda Cousins recently received an Educator of the Year award from the Education Council of the Fayette Chamber of Commerce. Brenda is a Head Start instructor at the Redstone Center. Brenda was nominated for this recognition by Head Start supervisor, Paula Hitabidel.
  • Private Industry Council Offers Free Adult Education Classes
    The Private Industry Council of Westmoreland Fayette, Inc (PIC) is pleased to announce current openings in their free classes for adults aged 17 and older who need help with basic reading, writing, and math or wish to prepare for the General Educational Development (or GED®) exam.

    Do you cringe every time you see a colleague throw out a recyclable bottle, can, or printer paper? Well so did the Education and Technology Institute’s Energy Readiness class, so we decided to do something about it.
  • Fayette Energy Project Supervisor Hired
    Tim Yurcisin, president of the Private Industry Council of Westmoreland/Fayette, Inc., is pleased to announce that Brad Geyer has been hired as the Fayette Energy Project Supervisor, effective January 3, 2011.
  • 2010 Fayette Enrichment Program wraps up with Carnegie Science Center's “Science on the Road” program.
    The fall session of the Fayette Enrichment after school programs have wrapped up for the holidays! This portion of the school year saw many great programs and activities happening within both the elementary schools and the junior highs and high school.
  • The Private Industry Council Receives a Spring Grant to Support a Community Garden Project in Monessen.
    The Private Industry Council is pleased to announce that it is a recipient of a Spring Biodiversity grant. Spring is a funding program of The Sprout Fund and supported by the Pittsburgh Foundation. The goal of the program is to offer opportunities for the citizens of southwestern Pennsylvania to combat environmental challenges and demonstrate the value of biodiversity, or the variety of life on earth.
  • Head Start Holds an Open House to Celebrate the National Center of Excellence Award.
    Open House was held on Friday, November 19th, 2010, at the North Union Head Start site located in Uniontown, Pennsylvania. This event was held in honor of the Head Start of Fayette County program being designated as a U.S. Department of Health and Human Services National Center of Excellence In Early Childhood.
  • PIC to Participate in the Westmoreland County's "Day of Giving".
    The Private Industry Council of Westmoreland/Fayette, Inc. is seeking your support to help us strengthen our ability to assist individuals and families in improving their economic and employment opportunities.   • The Private Industry Council Sponsors a Lights On Afterschool Event
    On Thursday, October 21, 2010, the Private Industry Council of Westmoreland/Fayette, Inc., (PIC) sponsored a "Lights On Afterschool" event in support of after school programs.

  • First Steps PA: Getting the Word Out
    First Steps PA: Getting the Word Out is new campaign aimed at promoting early learning in Pennsylvania. The First Steps PA campaign, found at www.firststepspa.org, is the largest voter education and registration effort of its kind ever launched in Pennsylvania.

  • Head Start of Fayette County is Designated as a
    National Center of Excellence in Early Childhood

    The Private Industry Council of Westmoreland/Fayette, Inc. is pleased to announce that the Department of Health and Human Services has designated our Head Start/Early Head Start program as a National Center of Excellence In Early Childhood.

  • Dads Matter Saturday Seminar Offered Strategies for Dealing with Important Parenting Issues
    Fatherhood education program Dads Matter hosted their latest free "Saturday Seminar" on Saturday, September 25, 2010 in the Corporate Training Wing of the Eberly Building at Penn State Fayette in Uniontown. Over 20 parents attended this event.

  • Private Industry Council's Annual Celebration
    of Achievement

    PIC held a "Celebration of Achievement" ceremony to honor 278 Adult Education students and 28 Education and Technology Institute graduates. Dan Wukich, CEO of Quest Healthcare, Inc., was the keynote speaker.

  • PIC Hires a New Assistant Director of Education
    Tim Yurcisin, president of the Private Industry Council of Westmoreland/Fayette, Inc., is pleased to announce that Janet Ward has been hired as the Private Industry Council's assistant director of education, effective August 31, 2010.

  • PIC Summer Youth Work Programs A Success!
    The Summer Youth Employment and Youth Work Learning programs were the result of a partnership between the Private Industry Council of Westmoreland/Fayette, Inc. and the Westmoreland-Fayette Workforce Investment Board. Collectively the programs provided 290 youth with meaningful and practical work experiences at local municipalities, school districts, townships, governmental offices, and nonprofit organizations throughout Westmoreland and Fayette Counties.

  • Pathways Out Of Poverty Participants attend
    Ontility Solar Electric Training at Penn State Fayette
    As part of the Private Industry Council's Pathways Out Of Poverty program, several participants attended the Ontility Solar Electric Training at Penn State Fayette. The participants underwent both classroom and hands-on training to prepare them for Entry-level Solar Electric Certification.

  • Head Start/Early Head Start of Fayette County's
    Perry Center Receives Grant to Enhance Outdoor Play.
    The Private Industry Council of Westmoreland/Fayette, Inc. (PIC), is pleased to announce that it is the recipient of a $5,000 grant by the Head Start Body Start (HSBS) National Center for Physical Development and Outdoor Play. The purpose of HSBS is to increase physical activity, outdoor play and healthy eating among Head Start and Early Head Start children, families, and staff.

  • Fayette County Energy Summit.
    The Private Industry Council hosted an Energy Summit at Penn State Fayette, the Eberly Campus. According to Sean Sypolt of the Private Industry Council, the goal of the Summit was to provide information about how Fayette County can benefit from both renewable and natural resources.

  • It’s Fun to Learn on the Fun Bus Run.
    Head Start and Early Head Start staff and management attended pre-service week from July 19th through July 23rd at Penn State Fayette, the Eberly Campus.

  • PIC Summer Youth Programs.
    During the months of June and July PIC held its annual high school YouCube program and New Adventures middle school camp in Westmoreland County and the Fayette Enrichment Program in Brownsville, Uniontown, Connellsville, and Albert Gallatin Areas School Districts.

  • 2010 Fayette Enrichment Summer Program Is a Hit.
    This past spring PIC was awarded a grant through the PA Department of Education to address the needs of at-risk youth in grades 6-12 in the Fayette County region by creating 21st Century Community Learning Centers.

  • Press Conference Held To Announce
    No Cost Training Program.
    On Wednesday, June 23, 2010, PIC held a press conference to announce the kickoff of the Southwestern PA Manufacturing Boot Camp (MBC) program. The MCB program provides 200 hours of free manufacturing-specific skills training over a five week period to qualified individuals.

  • 2009-2010 PIC Divisional Employees of the Year.
    Congratulations to Sheila Barclay, Mary Lou Friedline and Shannon Kossar who are being recognized as Private Industry Council of Westmoreland/Fayette, Inc. Divisional Employees of the Year. In June each was awarded a $500 check and a bouquet of flowers.

  • 2010 YouCUBE Summer Programming. The Youth Careers Utilizing Basic Engineering (YouCUBE) summer programming will begin on Wednesday June 11, 2010. Twenty high school students from Westmoreland County schools will be touring ten schools and companies over the 11-day program.

  • Manufacturing Boot Camp Wants You!
    Anyone interested in participating in the Southwestern PA's Manufacturing Boot Camp Summer/Fall 2010, endorsed by some of the regions leading manufacturing firms, please contact the PA CareerLink-Westmoreland in Youngwood.

  • Staff Changes at PIC. Tim Yurcisin (PIC's CEO and President) is pleased to announce that Tina Kemerer has been promoted to PA CareerLink® Westmoreland Employment and Training Supervisor and welcome Gerald Toth, who has been recently hired as Building Maintenance Supervisor/Safety Officer for the Private Industry Council.

  • PIC Connection Has Moved to Brownsville Area School District's External TV.
    On December 22, Fayette County lost its only local television station, HSTV Channel 19. For 17 years HSTV broadcasted local news, events and family friendly programming, including the PIC Connection.

  • Plum High School's Atomic Shock reigns victorious over the 5th Annual BotsIQ Competition.
    The competition was fierce and the bots relentless-- but in the end, Atomic Shock built by Plum High School stood alone as the champion of the 2010 Southwestern PA BotsIQ battle beating out 43 other teams for the title.

  • Red-Tailed Hawk Released Back
    in to the Wild at the PIC Greensburg Office.

    Several members of the PIC staff and a few program participants experienced Earth Day two days early in Greensburg. The group observed the release back into the wild of a red-tailed hawk found injured behind the PIC Corporate facility in a few weeks prior.

  • PIC to Expand Afterschool Programming to Middle and High School Students in Fayette County. PIC has been selected as a recipient of 21st Century Community Learning Center (CCLC) grant funds. These funds will be used to create four community learning centers that will provide a comprehensive array of after school and summer educational programming to targeted at risk students in grades 6-12 from the following schools in Fayette County.

  • PIC YouCube Youth Success Stories. PIC congratulates Alyssa LeCuyer and Chris Barner. Alyssa has recently been accepted to the Bradford School of Business. Chris has earned the rank of Eagle Scout with the Boy Scouts of America.

  • New Adventures Summer Camp Now Accepting Applications. The New Adventures: Engineering, Manufacturing and Robotics Camp is now accepting applications for this summer. The camp will run Monday, July 12 through Friday, July 16. The camp fee is $20. The camp is for youth Grades 6 - 8.

  • "Order in the Home, Order in the Court". Fattherhood education program Dads Matter will host "Order in the House, Order in the Court" on Saturday, March 20 in the Corporate Training Center of the Eberly Building at Penn State Fayette in Uniontown.

  • PIC Promotes Sean Sypolt to Pathways Out of Poverty Project Manager. Sean Sypolt, has been promoted from Fayette CareerLink® site administrator to Pathways Out of Poverty project manager.

  • PIC Mourns the Death of One of Its Champions. The Private Industry Council of Westmoreland/Fayette, Inc. wishes to express our deepest sympathy to the family and friends of Congressman John Murtha (D-PA), who passed away Monday, February 8, 2010.

  • PIC is Awarded a $2.7 Million Federal Stimulus Grant to Support "Green" Job Training. Congressman John P. Murtha (PA-12) announced that the Private Industry Council of Westmoreland/Fayette, Inc. has been awarded a $2,733,719 federal stimulus grant from the U.S. Department of Labor to expand job training services in Fayette County.

  • PIC has been awarded American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) funding in the amount of $322,575 to increase the number of pre-school age children served by its Head Start program in Fayette County. Obtained through a competitive RFP process, this funding will enable PIC to fill an identified need in the community.

  • Governor Rendell has designated its Head Start/Early Head Start of Fayette County Program as a Center of Excellence nominee. The National Centers of Excellence Program will recognize 10 Head Start and Early Head Start grantees across the country that are performing at the highest levels of quality.

  • Congressman Murphy and Private Industry Council proud to announce Early Head Start Expansion. PIC has been awarded American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) funding in the amount of $487,387 to increase the number of children served by its Early Head Start program in Fayette County.   • PIC Promotes Janice Albright to PA Careerlink® Westmoreland Site Administrator. Janice Albright has been promoted from PA CareerLink® Westmoreland Employment and Training Supervisor to PA CareerLink® Westmoreland Site Administrator, effective November 23, 2009.

  • PIC hosted its third annual Lights On Afterschool rally. The Lights On Afterschool event was held on Thursday, October 22, 2009 at Penn State Fayette to raise awareness of local afterschool programs and the importance of family involvement in the education of young children.

  • CareerLink Staff in Westmoreland and Fayette Counties Assist Unemployed in Meeting or Exceeding PA Common Measures. CareerLink customers receiving Intensive and Training services during the 4th quarter of the 2008 program year met or exceeded all of the performance standards set by the state.

  • PIC Offers Assistance In Preventing Homelessness in Westmoreland County. PIC has been selected by the Westmoreland County Department of Planning and Development as one of three organizations to administer the Homelessness Prevention and Rapid Re-Housing Program (HPRP) in Westmoreland County.

  • U.S. Congressman Tim Murphy Recognizes PIC's 2008-2009 Divisional Employees of the Year. Representative Tim Murphy of the 18th Congressional District recently visited the Private Industry Council's corporate location in Greensburg to recognize PIC's 2008-2009 Divisional Employees of the Year.   • PIC is a Recipient of a $4,995 Grant by HSBS. The purpose of HSBS National Center for Physical Development and Outdoor Play is to increase physical activity, outdoor play and healthy eating among Head Start and Early Head Start children, families, and staff.   • Summer Youth Employment Update. Several local youth have experienced a number of particularly unique accomplishments, thanks to the Summer Youth Employment Program.   • Celebration of Achievemet
    On October 18th, Private Industry Council of Westmoreland/ Fayette, Inc. (PIC) proudly welcomed back the GED graduates from the 2005-2006 program year. The annual event, aptly named the "Celebration of Achievement," recognizes the hard work and effort put forth by students to pass the GED test. During the 2005-2006 program year, PIC provided 758 individuals with remediation in academic subjects or study skills. Of those 758 students, 408 improved an academic level and 113 achieved a GED diploma.

  • Family Literacy Nights Fly with "Caterpillars to Butterflies"
    On October 11th, families visited the Greensburg PIC office for another night of family literacy activities, with a theme of "Caterpillars to Butterflies." All children participated in a related craft of finger-painting caterpillars or creating clothespin butterflies with painted wings. Parents either helped their children with the craft or built a butterfly puzzle for use at home. After the crafts, families listened to a presentation by "Bug Lady" Marci Beal.

  • Even Start's Family Literacy Night - Journey Into Space
    March's Literacy Night focused on a science theme, and was attended by nearly 80 children and adults. The evening began with PIC's own Rebecca Price, dressed as The Cat in the Hat, reading There's No Place Like Space, written by Tish Rabe. The book is a Cat in the Hat's Learning Library book that takes the reader on a wild trip to visit the nine planets of our solar system, along with the Cat in the Hat, Thing One, and Thing Two. Rebecca also showed the children the order of the planets in space, which all the children enjoyed tremendously..

  • Even Start's Family Literacy Night - I'm a Manatee
    This sing-song book follows a young boy's imaginative transformation into a manatee and the remarkable ways in which he describes his underwater life. A total of 37 children listened to the stories and performed along as Rebecca Price read I'm a Manatee. All families in attendance received a copy of the book to enjoy again at home.

    is a book that tells the story of the odd penguin Tacky, whose wacky actions embarrass his penguin friends.   • Fayette County Careerlink Assists Hurricane Katrina Survivors
    74 year old Joseph Yodonza, a Katrina evacuee from Metairie, LA, was born in Republic, PA. After the destruction occurred in Louisiana, he chose to come back to Fayette County to live in the area in which he was raised and seek the help of a few relatives who still reside here.
