The Private Industry Council Head Start/Early Head Start of Fayette County (HS/EHS Fay Co) is pleased to announce that in collaboration with California University of Pennsylvania, the Pittsburgh Association for Young Children (PAEYC) and the Pennsylvania Intermediate Unit 1 (IU1), they have been awarded a third year of funding for the PNC Foundation- Grow Up Great With Science Grant (GUGWS). The Private Industry Council of Westmoreland/Fayette, Inc. is proud to announce that the first graduates of the Pathways Out of Poverty funded Building Performance Institute (BPI) Energy Auditor Training have become certified Energy Auditors. Several graduates of the program including Geno Gallo, Shirley Rosenberger, and Timothy Wargo have taken advantage of the grant money available through the Pathways Out Of Poverty and Fayette Energy grants for business start-up expenses and have partnered to form Fayette Energy Consultants. While the Youth Careers Utilizing Engineering Program (YouCUBE) participants came away from the program with many freebies, they also came away with a unique experience which allowed them to glean much insight from industry insiders about the manufacturing field, employer expectations and career paths. The PIC Youth Staff is currently accepting applications for the 2011-2012 YouCUBE Program. There are some eligibility requirements. The Private Industry Council is happy to announce that the Fayette County Head Start Center of Excellence program, Social Emotional Early Development Success (SEEDS), will be hosting an Incredible Years Parent Group Training this fall. This training covers various topics including: child directed play, effective praise, positive discipline, limit-setting, how to handle misbehavior, time-outs, and adult problem solving. The Education and Technology Institute (ETI) will be offering TravelEDGE classes to Fayette County businesses and their employees who work in hospitality and tourism-related fields. TravelEDGE focuses on developing industry-specific customer service skills to help hospitality/tourism businesses get more customers. The Private Industry Council of Westmoreland/Fayette recently received a grant from the Office of Child Development and Early Learning (OCDEL) to fund the Fayette County Local Education and Resource Network (LEARN) Team. The Fayette County LEARN team, formerly known as the Community Engagement Group (CEG) will work diligently to become the catalyst which connects families to Early Learning Opportunities. On Saturday, August 27, 2011 Dads Matter will host a Saturday Seminar at the Four Points Sheraton in Greensburg, PA from 10:00am-1:00pm. Admission is free for this event and lunch is included! President Tim Yurcisin of the Private Industry Council of Westmoreland/Fayette, Inc., is pleased to announce that Jacquelyn Hoppe has been hired as the Director of Head Start/Early Head Start of Fayette County. Jacquelyn will be responsible for overseeing the Head Start/Early Head Start program of Fayette County, as well as overseeing operations of the PA Pre-K Counts Partnership. The seed started with the Private Industry Council’s proposal to the Pittsburgh based Sprout Fund in the winter of 2010. The Sprout program set out with hopes to catalyze community-based projects in Pittsburgh and surrounding communities that would inspire greater stewardship of our region’s natural resources. Congratulations to John Chedister, Helen Gilpin, and Sue Polojac who are being recognized as Private Industry Council of Westmoreland/Fayette, Inc. Divisional Employees of the Year. In June each was awarded a $500 check and an engraved personalized pen. May 25, 2011, was a highly anticipated day at Head Start/Early Head Start of Fayette County. This was the day that the program went to Idlewild Park! After weeks of preparation, nineteen buses rolled up the mountain that morning with families aboard. The Fayette Enrichment Program is gearing up for the 2011 summer session. For six weeks, starting on June 20, youth will have an opportunity to participate in a variety of exciting activities. On Saturday, April 30, 2011 Head Start/ Early Head Start, Pre-K, and Dads Matter met at Mount Saint Macrina to participate in the March of Dimes “March for Babies”. Thanks to all who participated and/or donated in the March of Dimes “March for Babies”. We raised $1,729.45! The Uniontown Mall recently played host to many of the county’s youngest artists. On April 20, 2011, Head Start/Early Head Start of Fayette County presented a “Museum of Art” in the walkways of the mall, using elaborately decorated tables to showcase artwork from each classroom and home-based area. Education and Technology Institute (ETI) instructor, Richard Bitner, just concluded teaching a Microsoft Office Certification class to three of six Excela Health employees. All three employees have concluded the class and passed their Excel certification tests. The remaining three will be going on to gain certification in Word, Power Point, or Outlook. Pathways is holding an Open House at the East End Community Center in Uniontown, PA. Attendees can explore green career opportunities and sign up for free solar, wind, and geothermal training on the spot. Pre-register for a chance to win the door-prize. It will be held at the East End United Community Center on Sat., April 23, from 9:30 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. The Private Industry Council of Westmoreland/Fayette, Inc. hosted the Latrobe Area Chamber of Commerce for a March Madness event on Thursday, March 24, 2011. Chamber Members were greeted by Private Industry Council President and C.E.O. Tim Yurcisin along with Chamber President and referee, Andy Stofan. The Fayette Enrichment Program held Parent Workshops in all sites: Albert Gallatin South Middle School, Brownsville (Middle and High School), Connellsville West, and Lafayette Jr. High. As part of the workshop, parents were given the opportunity to attend an informative session featuring Rick Sheffield from TAME, Inc. Mr. Sheffield spoke about Promoting Excellence at Home: Behaviors for Success. Head Start/Early Head Start of Fayette County celebrated Dental Education Month during February by providing Oral Health Education to their classrooms and home based areas. Registered Nursing students from the Penn State Fayette Campus along with Head Start LPNs provided a lesson with the help of ELMO’S Ready, Set, Brush pop-up book. Dads Matter, PIC’s fatherhood education program which is based in Fayette County, PA, will be hosting a kickoff luncheon for non-profit professionals to unveil the launch of their free Dad 2 Dad classes in Westmoreland County. The luncheon will be hosted at the Private Industry Council, 219 Donohoe Rd. in Greensburg on March 23, from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. The Private Industry Council of Westmoreland/Fayette, Inc., is pleased to announce that Rachel Saul has been hired as the Planner/Grants Writer, effective March 7, 2011. Her primary responsibilities will be to research and capture funding opportunities; as well as assist with Marketing and Public Relations. Congressman Mark Critz, representing the 12th Congressional District, Pennsylvania paid a visit to the Private Industry Council’s Early Childhood Division in Uniontown on Friday, February 25, 2011. The Congressman spent about an hour and a half learning about the Private Industry Council’s Early Childhood initiatives, including Head Start/Early Head Start, Pre-K Counts, and PIC’s newest initiative, SEEDS (Social Emotional Early Developmental Success). Gerard Sabolek came to the Pathways program with a desire to find his place in the modern world of “Green Energy” employment. He knew that although he had past experience in HVAC and Solar Energy, his skills were outdated. Gerard was also a little bit concerned about his age and whether he would still be able to physically perform the heavy labor of his past experience in HVAC, which included installing and removing furnaces. Our own Brenda Cousins recently received an Educator of the Year award from the Education Council of the Fayette Chamber of Commerce. Brenda is a Head Start instructor at the Redstone Center. Brenda was nominated for this recognition by Head Start supervisor, Paula Hitabidel. First Steps PA: Getting the Word Out is new campaign aimed at promoting early learning in Pennsylvania. The First Steps PA campaign, found at www.firststepspa.org, is the largest voter education and registration effort of its kind ever launched in Pennsylvania. National Center of Excellence in Early Childhood The Private Industry Council of Westmoreland/Fayette, Inc. is pleased to announce that the Department of Health and Human Services has designated our Head Start/Early Head Start program as a National Center of Excellence In Early Childhood. Fatherhood education program Dads Matter hosted their latest free "Saturday Seminar" on Saturday, September 25, 2010 in the Corporate Training Wing of the Eberly Building at Penn State Fayette in Uniontown. Over 20 parents attended this event. of Achievement PIC held a "Celebration of Achievement" ceremony to honor 278 Adult Education students and 28 Education and Technology Institute graduates. Dan Wukich, CEO of Quest Healthcare, Inc., was the keynote speaker. Tim Yurcisin, president of the Private Industry Council of Westmoreland/Fayette, Inc., is pleased to announce that Janet Ward has been hired as the Private Industry Council's assistant director of education, effective August 31, 2010. The Summer Youth Employment and Youth Work Learning programs were the result of a partnership between the Private Industry Council of Westmoreland/Fayette, Inc. and the Westmoreland-Fayette Workforce Investment Board. Collectively the programs provided 290 youth with meaningful and practical work experiences at local municipalities, school districts, townships, governmental offices, and nonprofit organizations throughout Westmoreland and Fayette Counties. Ontility Solar Electric Training at Penn State Fayette As part of the Private Industry Council's Pathways Out Of Poverty program, several participants attended the Ontility Solar Electric Training at Penn State Fayette. The participants underwent both classroom and hands-on training to prepare them for Entry-level Solar Electric Certification. Perry Center Receives Grant to Enhance Outdoor Play. The Private Industry Council of Westmoreland/Fayette, Inc. (PIC), is pleased to announce that it is the recipient of a $5,000 grant by the Head Start Body Start (HSBS) National Center for Physical Development and Outdoor Play. The purpose of HSBS is to increase physical activity, outdoor play and healthy eating among Head Start and Early Head Start children, families, and staff. The Private Industry Council hosted an Energy Summit at Penn State Fayette, the Eberly Campus. According to Sean Sypolt of the Private Industry Council, the goal of the Summit was to provide information about how Fayette County can benefit from both renewable and natural resources. Head Start and Early Head Start staff and management attended pre-service week from July 19th through July 23rd at Penn State Fayette, the Eberly Campus. During the months of June and July PIC held its annual high school YouCube program and New Adventures middle school camp in Westmoreland County and the Fayette Enrichment Program in Brownsville, Uniontown, Connellsville, and Albert Gallatin Areas School Districts. This past spring PIC was awarded a grant through the PA Department of Education to address the needs of at-risk youth in grades 6-12 in the Fayette County region by creating 21st Century Community Learning Centers. No Cost Training Program. On Wednesday, June 23, 2010, PIC held a press conference to announce the kickoff of the Southwestern PA Manufacturing Boot Camp (MBC) program. The MCB program provides 200 hours of free manufacturing-specific skills training over a five week period to qualified individuals. On December 22, Fayette County lost its only local television station, HSTV Channel 19. For 17 years HSTV broadcasted local news, events and family friendly programming, including the PIC Connection. The competition was fierce and the bots relentless-- but in the end, Atomic Shock built by Plum High School stood alone as the champion of the 2010 Southwestern PA BotsIQ battle beating out 43 other teams for the title. in to the Wild at the PIC Greensburg Office. Several members of the PIC staff and a few program participants experienced Earth Day two days early in Greensburg. The group observed the release back into the wild of a red-tailed hawk found injured behind the PIC Corporate facility in a few weeks prior. Last month the 10,000th individual was evaluated through the System for Assessment and Group Evaluation (SAGE). (PIC) proudly welcomed back the GED graduates from the 2005-2006 program year. The annual event, aptly named the "Celebration of Achievement," recognizes the hard work and effort put forth by students to pass the GED test. During the 2005-2006 program year, PIC provided 758 individuals with remediation in academic subjects or study skills. Of those 758 students, 408 improved an academic level and 113 achieved a GED diploma. On October 11th, families visited the Greensburg PIC office for another night of family literacy activities, with a theme of "Caterpillars to Butterflies." All children participated in a related craft of finger-painting caterpillars or creating clothespin butterflies with painted wings. Parents either helped their children with the craft or built a butterfly puzzle for use at home. After the crafts, families listened to a presentation by "Bug Lady" Marci Beal. Even Start's Family Literacy Night - Journey Into SpaceMarch's Literacy Night focused on a science theme, and was attended by nearly 80 children and adults. The evening began with PIC's own Rebecca Price, dressed as The Cat in the Hat, reading There's No Place Like Space, written by Tish Rabe. The book is a Cat in the Hat's Learning Library book that takes the reader on a wild trip to visit the nine planets of our solar system, along with the Cat in the Hat, Thing One, and Thing Two. Education and Technology Institute Receives Accredited StatusWe are pleased to announce that the Education and Technology Institute (ETI), has received accredited status from the Accrediting Council for Independent Colleges and Schools (ACICS). The grant term is for 3 years and extends through December 31, 2008. The Institute is also licensed by the Pennsylvania Department of Education's State Board of Private Licensed Schools.
